PITTSBURGH, PA – Tyler Ferguson threw 7 2/3 innings of shutout ball and struck out a career-high 11 batters as La Roche Baseball (23-17) downed Penn State Behrend (26-14-1) 3-0 and secured a spot in their second AMCC Tournament Championship Game under Head Coach Chase Rowe.
The Redhawks did not have an extra-base hit but used timely hitting to take control of the ballgame. La Roche took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Brian Tougher hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Matt Sabatini. Sabatini led off the inning with a walk and Lalle hustled down the first base line to force an errant throw by the pitcher to set up Tougher's RBI. The Redhawks added two more in the fifth inning on a 2-run single past second base by Dan Burns. Jesse Bauer threw 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to preserve the win.
Tyler Ferguson did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and allowed only 3 hits in 7 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out 11 batters to record his first postseason win. Jesse Bauer registered his first postseason save.
Penn State Behrend had runners in scoring position in the first, second, fourth, and sixth innings, but Ferguson ended all four innings with strikeouts.
La Roche will host Mt. Aloysius College tomorrow in the AMCC Tournament Championship starting at 10:00AM. The winner of the double elimination tournament will advance to the NCAA Tournament.
