MARIETTA, OH – The Redhawks out-hit #7 Marietta (10-4) 14-12 but La Roche Baseball (11-4) fell to the 2-time defending National Champions 8-5 in a non-conference game on Wednesday.
La Roche starting pitcher Ian Kelly did not allow a baserunner until the third inning when Marietta took a 2-0 lead. The Pioneers added 2 more runs in the fourth inning before the Redhawks tied it up with 4 runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Shane Healey doubled to lead off the inning and Lubin singled to left field moving Healey to third base. Marietta pitcher Stephen Bascom tried to pick off Lubin during the next at bat but overthrew the first baseman allowing Healey to score from third base. Brian Tougher followed with an RBI double to right field and two batters later Anthony Girdano doubled to left to score Tougher. Andrew Zeger singled down the left field line to tie it at 4-4.
Marietta scored twice in the bottom half of the fifth inning but an RBI double by Tougher cut the deficit to just one run. The Redhawks had runners at first and second base in the top of the ninth inning but a groundout ended the game.
Tougher went 3 for 5 with 2 doubles, 2 RBIs, and a run scored. Girdano registered 3 hits, was hit by a pitch, drove in a run, and scored, and Williamson reached twice and scored. Lubin singled twice and scored and Zeger had 2 hits including an RBI single.
Redhawks' starter Ian Kelly threw 4 innings and allowed 4 runs on 4 hits while striking out 3 batters and walking 2. Walt Hadjuk (0-1) gave up 2 runs on 4 hits in 1 2/3 innings of work to record the loss and Adam Rosseau and Tim Devine allowed a run each in 2 1/3 combined innings.
La Roche Baseball will travel to Penn State Behrend on Saturday for their AMCC Conference opener. The Lions are 9-5 and coming off a 2-1, 13-0 double-header sweep of Gettysburg College.
