MARIETTA, OH – La Roche Baseball split a double-header with OAC Champion #23 Marietta College 12-7 (L), 5-1 (W) on Sunday evening in non-conference play. The teams also split a 2-game series at John Arnold Sr. Memorial on March 20.
After trading runs in the first two innings of Game 1, the Redhawks scored three in the fourth and one more in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. Frazee Barlamas got things started when he was hit by a pitch and scored two batters later on Sean Lubin's single into left field. Corey Podvasnik doubled down the right field line for the second run of the inning and Ben Herstine provided an RBI on a groundout to short.
Marietta responded with five runs in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of home runs. La Roche tied it up in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Luis Navedo, but Marietta scored two in the sixth and three in the seventh and held on.
Colin Feikles went 3 for 5 with 2 runs, an RBI, and a double. Navedo and Tougher each had 2 hits including a double and scored a run.
La Roche starting pitcher Tyler Ferguson threw a gem as the Redhawks earned the 5-1 Game 2 victory. Ferguson went 8 innings and struck out 11 batters while allowing just one run on 3 hits.
La Roche scored two in the first inning and one in the second to go up three runs early. The first six Redhawk batters reached base including Williamson and Barlamas who scored on RBIs by Tougher and Lubin. Matt Sabatini singled home Podvasnik in the second inning.
Ferguson did not allow a hit until the bottom of the fifth when a single up the middle broke up the no-hit bid. Marietta crossed home plate once in the inning but the Pioneers only registered one hit in the final three innings as La Roche cruised to the win.
Barlamas reached base three times, scored, and hit in two and Sabatini singled, doubled, and had an RBI. Williamson scored twice while Navedo and Podvasnik scored once. Tougher and Lubin each had an RBI in the victory.
La Roche Baseball will host the AMCC Tournament next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Redhawks open play with Pitt-Greensburg on Friday.
