Redhawks Fall to Commonwealth Champion Widener in NCAA Tournament Opener, Will Play Tomorrow at 9:30AM

MARIETTA, OH – #5 seeded La Roche College Baseball (30-14) fell in the NCAA Mideast Regional opening game to #4 Widener(32-11) 8-1 on Wednesday morning. Widener earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after beating Alvernia in the Commonwealth Championship game.

Widener, who is making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2010, got on the board with three first inning runs. The Redhawks got one back when Colin Feikles led off the second with a single to right-centerfield and scored on John Watson's triple over the centerfielder's head. Watson however was unable to advance home in the inning despite reaching third base with just one out.

Widener added a run in the third inning and hung on for the victory.

Feikles had a strong game with three singles and scored and Watson knocked in the Redhawks' only run with an RBI triple. Watson and Luis Navedo each reached base twice in the loss.

Starting pitcher Cole Lentz gave relief to the bullpen tossing seven innings and keeping the Redhawks within striking distance. Ryan Fennell made his second career NCAA Tournament appearance throwing an inning of relief.

Despite the loss, La Roche plays on with a 9:30AM on Thursday startime against the loser of the Marietta vs. Penn State Berks first round game.

In 2012, the Redhawks dropped the first game of the tournament but rallied to beat Westminster College 3-2 to become the first team in school history to win an NCAA Tournament game. Lentz earned the 2012 tournament victory.
