PITTSBURGH, PA – La Roche College Baseball opened AMCC Conference play with a two-game sweep of Penn State Altoona on Wednesday afternoon.
Starting pitcher Regis Sauers retired 9 of the first 10 batters he faced and Colin Williamson scored in the first and third innings as La Roche went up 3-0. Altoona tied it with two runs in the top of the fourth but John Watson led off the bottom of the inning with a triple and scored on an Alex Simone single up the middle.
David Lemley added a run in the fifth inning and Sauers did not allow another hit as La Roche won Game One 4-2.
Sauers threw a gem to earn his second complete game victory. He allowed just 5 players to reach base and gave up 2 runs while striking out 4.
Williamson scored twice and Watson tripled and scored. Simone and Matt Sabatini each provided RBI in the win.
In Game Two, the Redhawks and Altoona were deadlocked at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth when La Roche broke out the bats. Lemley, Sabatini, and Luis Navedo all had doubles and the Redhawks strung together four straight hits to go up 6-2.
La Roche scored again in the sixth on a Navedo triple and added another in the eighth on a Sabatini RBI double.
Tanner Wilt got the start and gave up just one run while striking out 8 batters. Tyler Ferguson tossed 3 innings of relief to earn the win. Brady Hamer and Matt Thompson combined for two scoreless innings.
Baseball plays another AMCC double-header on Saturday when they host D'Youville. Game times are 1pm and 3pm.
