PITTSBURGH, PA – Cory Podvasnik hit a clutch 3-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Redhawks overcame a four run deficit to beat Pitt-Greensburg 10-8. La Roche advances to play Penn State Behrend at noon tomorrow.
La Roche left the bases loaded in the first inning but struck first thanks to a Podvasnik RBI double over the third base bag. Regis Sauers did not allow a hit through the first three innings but Pitt-Greensburg used a 2-run double in the fourth to go up 2-1.
It did not take long for La Roche to answer because in the bottom half of the inning John Watson smacked a 3-run bomb over the left field wall. The Bobcats regained the lead with four runs in the fifth and another two in the sixth.
A sixth inning RBI triple by Colin Williamson and a Colin Feikles RBI single up the middle cut the deficit to just one run. Then in the eighth inning, Podvasnik left the yard with his clutch 3-run dinger to give La Roche the 10-8 lead. Walt Hadjuk threw a perfect ninth inning to preserve the victory.
Podvasnik (4 RBI), Watson (3 RBI), Williamson (RBI) and Feikles (RBI) hit in runs while Williamson (3 runs), Sabatini (2 runs), Watson (2 runs), Navedo (run), Podvasnik (run) and Barlamas (run) scored.
Brady Hamer earned his second win of the year in relief and Wadjuk got the save.
La Roche advances in the winner's bracket where they will play Penn State Behrend tomorrow. First pitch is approximately 12 noon (30 minutes after tomorrow's game 1).
