La Roche Baseball Makes It Back-to-Back Championships! Advances to NCAA Tournament For Third Time in Four Years

PITTSBURGH, PA -- La Roche Baseball won their second straight AMCC Championship and their third in the past four years after defeating Penn State Behrend in the Championship Round's second game 22-2. The Redhawks dropped the first game 11-6.

Starting pitcher David Lemley struck out Game 1's first two batters and got a ground out to end the first inning. He sent the Lions down in order in the top of the second and La Roche took advantage in the bottom half of the inning. Franzee Barlamas led off the inning with a leadoff walk and scored on a Dylan Wolsonovich single to left. Three batters later Colin Williamson left the yard with a three-run homer over the left field wall.

Penn State Behrend got one back in the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-1. Matt Sabatini hit his first career triple in the bottom of the inning and scored on a John Watson RBI single.

A pair of errors allowed the Lions to take a 7-5 lead in the sixth and a 6-4-3 double play ended the Redhawks half of the inning. Penn State Behrend added four more and held on for the 11-6 Game 1 win.

Two first inning errors put La Roche ahead 3-0 in Game 2. A Luis Navedo RBI double and Dylan Wolsonich run-scoring single extended the lead to five in the fourth inning.

In the fifth inning, Sabatini registered his second career triple and scored on a Williamson single to right. Feikles singled home Williamson to make it 7-0.

Podvasnik added a two run homer in the fifth inning to record his tenth of the season. The home run tied Dave Bredl ('90-'93) for the school's single season record.

Podvasnik, Wolsonovich, and Sabatini were named to the All-Tournament Team. Podvasnik went 7 for 17 with 3 home runs, 7 RBI, 6 runs, 2 doubles and reached base 13 times. Wolsonovich went 8 for 18 with 8 runs, and 7 RBI. Matt Sabatini went 10 for 18 with 8 runs, 3 RBI and 2 triples.

La Roche moves on to their second consecutive NCAA Tournament Regional and their third in the past four seasons. The Redhawks are likely headed to Washington & Jefferson for the tournament.
