WASHINGTON, PA – AMCC Pitcher of the Year Tyler Ferguson gave the Redhawks a gutsy performance throwing all ten innings in their NCAA Regional game against Heidelberg. La Roche dropped the tournament's first game 6-5 (10 innings) and they will play Frostburg State tomorrow at 3:15pm.
La Roche gained the early advantage scoring twice in the second inning. John Watson ripped an RBI double into the right field gap to score Colin Feikles and Brian Tougher followed with a bloop single scoring Watson.
The Redhawks added another run in the third inning on a Luis Navedo sacrifice fly. Tyler Ferguson worked out of a one-out bases loaded jam in the bottom of the third. A Heidelberg hitter popped out and then Ferguson blocked the plate on a runner trying to score on a passed ball.
La Roche went up 4-0 in the fourth but Heidelberg hit a 2-run homer to cut the deficit to two. The Redhawks got one back on a Cory Podvasnik double in the top of the fifth.
Heidelberg scored two runs in the seventh but Ferguson limited the damage by stranding runners at second and third base. In the ninth Heidelberg tied it up on a 2-out single and then they won it in the tenth.
Ferguson threw the longest game of his career striking out 7 batters in 9 2/3 innings of work. Tougher went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and a double while Feikles had 2 hits and scored twice.
