PITTSBURGH, PA –La Roche College Baseball could not hold a 6-2 eighth inning lead as they fell to Heidelberg University 7-6. Despite the loss, the Redhawks still hold a 3-1 advantage against OAC Conference teams.
Starting pitcher Tanner Wilt limited Heidelberg to just a run, pitching out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning. Wilt threw a 0-1 pitch down in the zone to set up a tailor made 6-4-3 double play. The Redhawks picked Wilt up with three runs in the bottom half of the first. Colin Williamson blooped a 2-run single to right field and Ian Velez scored on an error.
Wilt again pitched out of a jam in the second inning but settled down and allowed just one more run over the next four innings. That run got Heidelberg back within one in the fifth inning but La Roche answered with two in the bottom of the fifth.
David Lemley smacked a 1-1 pitch the opposite way for an RBI double and Ben Herstine scored on a sacrifice fly in the next at bat. La Roche upped their lead to four on a Shane Roebuck RBI single in the seventh inning.
Heidelberg fought back with two runs in the eighth inning. La Roche still held a 6-4 lead heading into the ninth but the Student Princes drew two walks and a hit batsman to load the bases. The Redhawks were able to get retire the next two batters with a strikeout and run-scoring fielder's choice, but a 2-run double put Heidelberg ahead for good.
Despite the loss, the Redhawks continue to swing the bat well. Lemley went 3 for 4 with an RBI double and scored twice. Williamson hit in three and Herstine scored twice.
La Roche returns to the diamond next Wednesday at 1pm for their AMCC Conference opener. The Redhawks welcome Mt. Aloysius to town.
