MARIETTA, OH -- La Roche freshman catcher Shane Roebuck had a seventh inning RBI double and run to help lift the Redhawks to a 3-2 win over Marietta College. Freshman starting pitcher Nick Tunstall did not allow an earn run (2 unearned runs) in 5.2 innings while Shane Emrich and Trey Claar each threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
La Roche grabbed a first inning lead on a Luis Navedo single up the middle to score Colin Williamson. Tunstall followed with five straight scoreless frames including inning ending strikeouts in 4 of his 5 innings. He got into a jam in the sixth inning and allowed two runs after an error negated what would have been the third out. Emrich came in and continued Tunstall's trend by striking out the final batter with men on second and third.
Ian Velez got things going in the top of the seventh inning by drawing a full count walk and stealing second base. Three pitches later Roebuck roped a double to right field to tie it up and then scored on a groundout to shortstop.
Claar entered the game in the eighth inning and stranded runners at second and third base. In the bottom of the ninth he left a runner at second base to record his seventh save of the season and earn La Roche the big win.
Claar's seven saves are tied for third most in AMCC history and also on the school's single season list. Ruben DeLeon (9 in 2004) and Jesse Bauer (8 in 2012) currently rank ahead of Claar. Emrich recorded the victory to improve to 2-0 in his career.
