PITTSBURGH, PA – The La Roche College baseball team remained perfect against AMCC competition after sweeping D'Youville College 16-1, 14-1 in a two game series on Sunday.
La Roche used a fourteen run second inning to cruise to a 16-1 game 1 victory.
D'Youville got men to second and third base and scored on a passed ball to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. La Roche responded in the bottom half of the inning when a Tyler Craig groundout scored Ian Velez from third base. The Redhawks tacked on thirteen more in the inning including three-run homers by David Lemley and Luis Navedo. Every La Roche starter scored a run in the inning including Velez, Navedo, Taylor Huber, Colin Williamson and Corey Lazor who each scored twice.
La Roche added a run on a Huber triple down the right field line in the third and a Shane Roebuck homer in the fifth.
Starting pitcher Brady Hamer did not allow an earned run to register the win. He gave up just two hits and struck out four in six innings of work. Ryan Letzelter threw a scoreless seventh inning of relief.
Lazor, Navedo and Lemley each hit in three and Velez scored three times.
La Roche again cruised in game 2 defeating D'Youville 14-1. Lemley struck out the first four batters including the side in the second inning. Roebuck followed in the bottom of the second with a blast over the Redhawk Wall to give La Roche a 1-0 lead. Two batters later Mitchell Yard doubled and scored to put La Roche up 2-0.
D'Youville cut into the lead with an RBI double in the top of the third but La Roche answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Velez scored on a passed ball and Williamson singled home Craig from second base.
The Redhawks added to their lead with six runs in the fifth. Williamson, Herstine and Craig provided RBI singles while Velez and Ryan Denny had sacrifice flies. Williamson again came through with a run-scoring single in the seventh with Lazor and Scruggs hitting in runs as well.
Lemley was strong on the mound allowing just one run and striking out seven in six innings. Williamson and Denny each hit in three while Roebuck and Craig each scored three.
The Redhawks return to action on Thursday for a single 9-inning game against Thiel. First-pitch is 4pm.
