PITTSBURGH, PA -- The La Roche baseball team had a historic day with Tanner Wilt striking out 13 batters in a 1-hitter and Ben Herstine hitting for the cycle. The Redhawks picked up a pair of victories over Medaille (4-0, 10-2) for their eleventh straight win and a perfect 10-0 record in conference.
Game 1: Starting pitcher Tanner Wilt had one of the best pitching performances in school history striking out 13 and allowing just one hit to earn the complete game shutout.
Wilt was dealing in the first three innings striking out 8 of the first 10 batters. In the bottom of the third, the Redhawks gave Wilt the only score he needed with a Luis Navedo double to the wall scoring Tyler Craig from second.
Right fielder Cory Lazor provided a web gem in the fourth robbing Medaille with a sliding catch. La Roche broke it open in the fifth inning with three runs. Ramon Rios led off the inning with a single and scored on a Lazor sacrifice fly. Navedo followed with a 2-run double to the gap and Professori hit in the third run on a single to right.
Wilt faced the minimum in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings as La Roche picked up the AMCC victory.
Game 2: Herstine had a historic performance in the second game registering a single, double, triple and home run to earn his first career cycle.
Medaille got on the board with an unearned run in the first inning but La Roche answered with two runs in the third. Navedo provided a sac fly and and in the next at bat Herstine legged out an inside the park home run.
Medaille tied it at 2-2 in the top of the sixth but Ian Velez led off the bottom half of the inning with a triple and took the lead on a Shane Roebuck sac fly. Herstine gave La Roche a cushion with a triple and score in the seventh and Joe Professori followed with a two-run shot over the left field wall. Tyler Craig put it out of reach with a two out 2-run single.
Regis Sauers got the win to remain perfect on the season.
