#11 La Roche Staves Off Elimination, Beats Randolph Macon in Twelve to Force Winner Take All Game Tomorrow

WASHINGTON, PA – #11 La Roche is heading to the winner-take-all NCAA Mideast Regional Championship game tomorrow after beating #2 Randolph Macon 7-2 (12 innings) on Saturday night.

Randolph Macon had runners on second and third in the eleventh with just one out but Shane Emrich got a groundout, strikeout to send it to the bottom of the twelfth where La Roche scored five runs. Starting pitcher Ethan Lewis gave an incredible performance limiting Randolph Macon to just two runs in ten innings.

Rick Spiers led off Randolph Macon's half of the first with a home run over the centerfield wall for a 1-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases with no outs in the third but starting pitcher Ethan Lewis limited the damage to just one run with a double-play groundout and a flyout to centerfield.

The Redhawks took advantage of two Randolph Macon errors to tie it at 2-2 in the top of the fifth. Spiers misplayed an Ian Velez single to right field which allowed Cody Scruggs to score all the way from first base. Shane Roebuck doubled into the gap two batters later for the game-tying run.

Randolph Macon placed runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh but a terrific backhanded grab by Lewis and a 4-6-3 inning-ending double-play kept it at 2-2. Lewis came up big again getting Travis Lodge to fly out to center with a man on third in the eighth.

La Roche had the winning run on third base in the top of the ninth but a comebacker to the mound kept the score tied. Lewis sent Randolph Macon down in order in the bottom of the ninth to send it to extras.

Shane Roebuck led off the tenth with a single up the middle and Tyler Craig laid down a perfect sac bunt to put Roebuck in scoring position. Randolph Macon's reliever Christian Cook however got two straight 4-3 groundouts to end La Roche's half of the tenth.  

Lewis left another Yellow Jacket on third base in the bottom of the tenth when he got Christian Sanderson to chase a high fastball on a 2-2 pitch.

Shane Emrich came into relieve Lewis in the ninth and pitched the Redhawks out of what could have been a season-ending jam. Randolph Macon had runners on second and third with just one out but Emrich got Michael Trentham to chop it back to the mound and then Stuart Brown to swing and miss at a 2-2 fastball.

Velez doubled into the right field corner to get the Redhawks aboard with no outs. Roebuck followed two batters later with a flyout to deep right field advancing Velez to third and then Craig came through with a streamer down the right field line for the game winning run. La Roche's offense went off from there with Lazor (RBI double), Navedo (2-run double) and Herstine (RBI single) all hitting in runs.

Emrich sent the Yellow Jackets down in order in the bottom of the twvelfth to send it to the winner take all game.

Lewis allowed just one earned run on seven hits in ten innings of work.
