PITTSBURGH, PA – The La Roche baseball team picked up an important non-conference win after beating Baldwin Wallace 11-3 in their home opener on Thursday afternoon. Baldwin Wallace was ranked 24th in the nation as recently as two weeks ago.
Starting pitcher Garren Telesz stranded a runner at second base and the Redhawk offense backed him up with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. David Lemley singled in Corey Lazor to start the scoring and Ian Velez added a sacrifice fly.
Telesz' only blemish came in the second inning when he allowed a two-out two run home run. La Roche responded in the bottom half of the inning on a Lemley RBI single and Lazor sac fly.
Velez led off the third inning with a double and scored on a Joe Professori single. Lazor provided his second RBI of the game two batters later. Telesz threw a scoreless fourth and Mitchell Yard went yard to put the Redhawks up 8-2 after four innings.
Chris Hanlon came in to relieve Telesz in the top of the fifth. He tossed two scoreless frames before allowing a solo shot in the top of the seventh.
The Redhawks' offense exploded for four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Professori led off the inning with a double. Ryan Denny, pinch running for Professori, scored on a Jonathan Spina double. Shane Roebuck added an RBI single in the inning and Lemley a sac fly.
Professori went 4 for 4, scored twice and hit in one. Velez had 3 hits, scored twice and had an RBI while Lemley hit in three. Chris Hanlon picked up the win in relief.
The Redhawks will travel to Marietta on Sunday for a non-conference double-header.
