CLEVELAND, OH – Cleveland native David Jackson finished with 9 points and 5 rebounds as the Redhawks (6-4) battled against a tough NCAA Division I and Horizon League opponent in Cleveland State (7-6). The host Vikings downed La Roche 89-42 in front of a large crowd at the Wolstein Center.
Cleveland State has a history of upsetting top-ranked teams including #7 Vanderbilt who they beat two years ago. The Vikings also handed losses to a trio of ranked teams in 2009 when they defeated #11 Syracuse, #23 Butler, and then upset Wake Forest in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
La Roche entered intermission trailing 44-15 but came out strong in the second half andmatched Cleveland State with 14 rebounds. They also shot 40% in the second half and held the Vikings to just 20% from beyond the arc.
Jackson and Lionel Perkins each scored 9 points to lead La Roche. Neal McKown netted 7 points and shot 50% from the field to go along with a team-high 5 boards. Andre Flanigan registered 6 points while Zaire Redding and Oneal Brown tallied 4 points apiece.
Cleveland State had the height advantage but the Redhawks did a great job pulling down 26 boards including 11 on the offensive end. La Roche assisted on 11 of 19 field goals and blocked 4 Vikings' shots.
Men's hoops will return to action in 2014 when they host Westminster College on January 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 7PM at the Fitness Center.
