HAMBURG, NY – La Roche men's hoops (8-5, 4-2) battled Hilbert College (10-2, 5-1) for two overtimes but suffered a tough 88-86 loss in a game between two first place teams.
La Roche took a 31-30 lead into the locker room and came out strong in the second half. They held an eight point advantage with 3:56 left to play, but Hilbert ended regulation on a 10-2 run to force overtime.
Neither team could gain much of an advantage in the first overtime. Hilbert went up a point late in the OT but David Jackson sunk a free throw to send it into a second overtime.
La Roche fought back from a five point deficit in the second overtime to tie it up. Lionel Perkins found Andre Flanigan for a game tying three with 36 seconds left, but Hilbert's Jerame Owens hit a layup at the buzzer to win it.
Perkins led the Redhawks with 24 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals while Flanigan had 21 points and 4 steals. Zaire Redding finished with a double-double (12 points, 13 rebounds) and David Jackson added 7 points and 12 rebounds. Neal McKown registered 15 points in the loss.
The Redhawks outscored Hilbert in the paint 56-42 including 34-14 in the second half. They also outrebounded the Hawks 51-37, but Hilbert held the turnover advantage and also shot 54% (7 of 13) from three-point range.
