BUFFALO, NY -- The La Roche men's basketball team fought for a full sixty minutes and took D'Youville College to the wire before falling 69-68.
The game was tight throughout with ten lead changes including seven in the second half. D'Youville held a three point edge with 2:24 left but Zaire Redding drained two free throws to cut the deficit to just one. La Roche forced a defensive stop on the next Spartan possession and Redding answered again to put the Redhawks up a point. D'Youville then used the entire shot clock and converted a layup with just nine seconds left. The Redhawks had a great last look at the basket but D'Youville held on for the 69-68 win.
Redding couldn't be stopped on the glass finishing with 17 boards and 16 points. Arnes Bajgora had a game-high 21 points (7 of 10 shots) and added 8 rebounds and 4 steals while Ryan Frantz (13 points) and Torin Smith (12 points) each reached double-figures.
La Roche controlled the boards outrebounding D'Youville 48-23 including 21-3 on the offensive glass. They also held the advantage in the paint (34-28), on 2nd chance points (23-8), and off of turnovers (11-7), however D'Youville hit 46% of their shots and 42% from beyond the arc to earn the win.
La Roche will travel to Carnegie Mellon University on Thursday for a non-conference game. Tip is at 7PM.
