Franciscan Hangs on to Defeat La Roche 53-48

PITTSBURGH, PA – The La Roche Redhawks Basketball team fell to Franciscan University 53-48 on Monday night in AMCC Conference play.

Neither the Redhawks nor Franciscan could get things going offensively in the first half with the teams combining for a chilly 29% from the field. The Barons held a slim 23-20 advantage at the half and Evan Bonnaure paced La Roche with 5 first half points.

The Redhawks trailed 33-26 with 14:36 left to play before a 10-0 run got them back in it. Ryan Frantz sparked the run with a three while Larry Brodie followed with an emphatic dunk on the fast break to give La Roche the lead.

La Roche again found themselves behind 38-37 before Zaire Redding forced four straight turnovers to put the Redhawks ahead by seven inside of six minutes. Franciscan stormed back with six straight points and both teams went back and forth for the lead. La Roche missed a pair of free throws trailing 51-48 and the Barons made a pair on the other end for the five point victory.

Arnez Bajgora finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds to register his third double-double of the season. Redding (10 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals) and Larry Brodie (10 points, 4 for 4 FG) each scored in double figures while Evan Bonnaure added 7 points and Andy Abreu 7 rebounds.

La Roche outrebounded Franciscan by ten but the difference in the game was the Redhawks cold shooting hitting just 29% from the floor and going 14 of 25 from the foul line.

The men's basketball team will travel to Penn State Altoona on Thursday for an AMCC Conference game. The Redhawks came away with a thrilling one point win over the Lions on December 3.
