PITTSBURGH, PA –The men's basketball team's three-game win-streak and undefeated conference record came to an end after falling at home to D'Youville College 83-77.
The Redhawks went on a 13-0 run with ten minutes left in the half to break a 17-17 tie. Ray Quan Phifer sparked the run with a steal and fastbreak layup and followed it with a three-pointer on a kickout from Evan Bonnaure. D'Youville responded scoring 17 of the next 20 points to enter intermission trailing by just three points. Arnes Bajogra was efficient inside scoring twelve points including six on free throws. Phifer finished the half with 9 points and Torin Smith had 8 points.
La Roche held the lead until the 14:36 mark when a Zach Blask three-pointer put D'Youville ahead by a point. Three consecutive fast break layups gave the Spartans a 55-47 advantage with just under twelve minutes to play but the Redhawks fought back and got within one on a Torin Smith three-pointer. D'Youville's defense held La Roche to just three points over the final six minutes to hold on for their first conference victory.
Bajgora scored a game-high 18 points and hit 8 of 9 free throws. Smith finished with 15 points (3 of 6 three-pointers) and 5 assists while Ray Quan Phifer added 13 points. Bonnaure had a quality all-around game with 9 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists.
La Roche will not play a conference game until January 9 of next year. They'll play just one more game before the holiday break when they host Hiram on December 19.
