PITTSBURGH, PA – The La Roche men's basketball team dropped a non-conference game on their home floor to Hiram College 88-81. The Redhawks enter the holiday break with a 3-7 record and sit in third place in the AMCC with a 3-1 conference mark.
La Roche's slow start on the boards saw them fall behind 10-2 but they quickly regrouped to take an 11-10 lead. All nine points came off of three-pointers with Ray Quan Phifer, Zack Gould and Dion Etheridge draining shots from beyond the arc. Hiram scored seven of the half's final nine points to enter the half with a 38-27 lead. Hiram was extremely efficient from the field hitting 53% of their shots to La Roche's 23%.
The Redhawks slowly chipped away at Hiram's second half lead until a Dion Etheridge layup got them within a basketball with thirteen minutes left. The Titan's responded with a pair of three pointers and despite a strong comeback attempt by La Roche, held on for the win.
Phifer and Torin Smith (5 three-pointers) led the Redhawks with 18 points each. Phifer also pulled down 9 rebounds while Etheridge registered a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Gould had a game-high 5 assists. Hiram's Kelvin Jones finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds.
The Redhawks return to the floor on January 4 with a home date against Carnegie Mellon.
