BUFFALO, NY -- The La Roche men's basketball team improved to 4-2 in the conference and 3-1 in conference road games after defeating defending AMCC Champion Medaille College 68-51. The Redhawks have now beaten the past two conference champions (Penn State Behrend, Medaille).
La Roche's defense (#2 in the AMCC) was incredible in the second half. Medaille entered the half with a 33-29 lead and hit 42% of their shots before the Redhawks clamped down to take control of the game. They allowed just one field goal in the opening eight minutes of the second half and then embarked on a 20-4 run over the next nine minutes. La Roche held Medaille to just 27% from the field (7 of 26) and outrebounded them 28-9 in the second.
The Redhawks held a 57-24 advantage on the glass for their highest total since setting a school record with 62 in a November 2011 victory over Mt. Aloysius. The 24 rebounds were a season-low for Medaille as was their 35% field goal percentage.
Arnes Bajgora (13 points, 15 rebounds), Dion Etheridge (13 points, 11 rebounds) and RayQuan Phifer ( 10 points, 11 rebounds) all recorded double-doubles while Ryan Norkus scored in double-figures (11 points). Medaille's Chris Willingham had 17 points and 9 rebounds in the losing effort.
La Roche will travel to Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday for a conference game. Pitt-Greensburg is 5-1 in the AMCC but coming off an 87-79 loss at Penn State Behrend.
