PITTSBURGH, PA – The men's basketball team overcame an eight point second half deficit to defeat Penn State Altoona 61-56 and improve to 7-3 in the AMCC Conference. The victory was their second this season over Penn State Altoona.
Neither team shot particularly well in the first half. Both the Redhawks and Penn State Altoona made just 25% from the field while the Lions went 0 for 9 from three-point range and La Roche 3 for 19. Torin Smith was the lone bright spot on the offensive end hitting 2 of 6 three-pointers while Andy Abreu pulled down 5 boards.
La Roche trailed by as many as eight points with just 7:53 left before working their way back into it. The Redhawks tied the game at the 1:47 mark on a steal and layup by Dion Etheridge and then a block by Darrell Barron allowed them to take the lead on the following possession. Etheridge made a pair of free throws and picked up a big rebound as La Roche held on for the win.
The Redhawks hit 44% of their shots in the second half to lift their percentage to 35% on the game. They made just 13 of 25 free throws but earned the victory thanks to 30 points from their bench.
Etheridge was strong on both ends of the floor scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 boards. Abreu had 14 points and 7 rebounds while Barron and Smith each scored 12 points.
The Redhawks return to the floor on Saturday for a big AMCC Conference game against Penn State Behrend. La Roche is the only team this season to beat Behrend.
