MARIETTA, OH – The La Roche men's basketball team fell to #17 Marietta College 101-75 in their season-opener on Tuesday night. The Pioneers were picked as OAC Preseason Co-Champions.
The Redhawks showed incredible fight to hang with the nation's seventeenth ranked team throughout the first half. Following a strong start, it looked like La Roche was beginning to fade but they responded with a 16-4 run to take a 42-41 lead late in the first. Dion Etheridge caught fire scoring eight straight points while Ryan Norkus and Evan Bonnaure capped the run with two straight threes.
Marietta closed the half on a 6-1 run to enter the intermission with a 47-42 lead. Both teams shot over 50% from the field and beyond the arc. Etheridge led the Redhawks with 10 first half points while Zach Gould had 8 points.
Marietta used a 15-0 run and then a 20-0 run to take control in the second half. The Redhawks shot just 27% (11 for 41) from the field and were outrebounded 30-17.
RayQuan Phifer scored a team-high 15 points while Etheridge and Arnes Bajgora (6 for 6 FT) each had 12 points.
The Redhawks will play their second straight road game on Thursday at Carnegie Mellon. Tip-off is 7:30pm.
