PITTSBURGH, PA – Dion Etheridge hit a pair of free throws with twelve seconds left in regulation to force overtime at the Kerr Fitness Center. With seven seconds left in the extra period, Capital University intercepted a La Roche inbounds pass and drove the length of the court to outlast the Redhawks 65-63. Capital improves to 3-0 and La Roche falls to 1-2.
The game was a back and forth affair with the lead changing twelve times. The early portion belonged to the Redhawks who enjoyed a lead by as many a six in the first but Capital closed the half strong for a 28-27 La Roche halftime lead.
The Redhawks put together a strong team effort in the second to hang on and force overtime. They limited their turnovers to just four in the second and also played tight defense. Capital led by as many as five points with two minutes left but free throws by Bonnaure and Etheridge and a late Etheridge layup on a dish by Phifer forced OT.
Dan Auble put Capital ahead two with a pair of free throws early in overtime. Phifer responded with two straight buckets for a 63-61 lead but the Crusaders Tyrell Jackson scored thirty seconds later to even things up. Both teams went scoreless for the next three minutes until Capital found the game winner with less than a second left.
Phifer scored a game-high 20 points and hit 9 of 10 free throws. Norkus and Etheridge each scored 9 points while Bajgora had 6 rebounds and Gould and Bonnaure 4 assists.
The Redhawks will travel back to Ohio on Tuesday for a non-conference game at Hiram. Tip-off is 7pm.
