HIRAM, OH -- The La Roche men's basketball team picked up another big road win beating Hiram 78-71 on Tuesday evening. Hiram was 19-8 last season and made the NEAC Conference Semifinal.
La Roche led by as many as nine points in the first half thanks to an 20-9 run midway through the first. Seven different Redhawks scored points during the run and they committed just one turnover to Hiram's five. The Terriers responded with a run of their own and tied it just before the half.
La Roche forced ten first half turnovers and eight Redhawks scored points. Twenty-two of Hiram's thirty first half points came from Kelvin Jones.
The Redhawks opened the second half on another 20-9 run to build up an eleven point lead. La Roche hit three three-pointers in less than four minutes and Arnes Bajgora added six points.
Like in the first half, Hiram again answered in the second half. They scored 21 of the next 30 points to take 60-59 lead with 7:39 left in regulation.
La Roche and Hiram traded baskets over the next three minutes until Dion Etheridge and RayQuan Phifer each hit a pair of free throws. Arnes Bajgora put the Redhawks up six on a tip-in and La Roche followed with 5 of 6 free throws.
Phifer finished just a rebound short of a double-double with 20 points and 9 boards. Bajgora and Gould each reached double-figures with 13 points and 12 points. Andy Abreu had 8 rebounds and Trell Thomas 3 steals.
The Redhawks outrebounded Hiram 42-36 including 24-10 in the second half. La Roche scored twenty-four bench points and hair 20 of 27 free throws.
La Roche will travel to #11 John Carroll on Saturday. Last year John Carroll won the OAC and made it to the NCAA Second Round.
