NEW WILMINGTON, PA – The La Roche College men's basketball team overcame an eight point second half deficit to beat Westminster 69-65 in an AMCC vs. PAC matchup on Wednesday night. The Redhawks run their win-streak to three and are now 5-3 on the season.
Both teams shot extremely well in the first half with the score changing hands six times. La Roche led by as many as five halfway through the first while Westminster's four point lead came just before the half. The Titans hit 50% of their first half shots and the Redhawks were just a shade under at 47%.
Westminster built their lead up to 8 points with 14:43 left but the Redhawks used tough defense to get back into it. La Roche went on a 12-2 run by dominating the boards, especially on the offensive end.
La Roche held a 62-59 lead with 3:10 left and the Titans threatening. The Redhawks forced a tough Westminster shot to stay up three. They then pulled down four straight offensive boards before RayQuan Phifer found Dion Etheridge for a wide open three.
Westminster got within two with 37 seconds left but Zach Gould answered with a pair of free throws to put the game away.
Evan Bonnaure was terrific with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. He also had a pair of threes and four offensive rebounds.
Arnes Bajgora (12 points) finished in double figures for the fifth straight game while Andy Abreu (10 points) was perfect from the field to record his first. RayQuan Phifer had 6 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists and Ryan Norkus had 9 points and 8 rebounds.
The Redhawks were excellent on the boards. They outrebounded Westminster 43-27 and 19-9 on the offensive end. La Roche also hit 41% (26 for 63) of their shots.
La Roche returns to conference action on Saturday and will travel to Hilbert College.
