PITTSBURGH, PA – The La Roche men's basketball team won the battle of the conference undefeateds taking down Medaille 89-76 on Saturday afternoon. The Redhawks have won five straight and are unbeaten in December.
The Redhawks were excellent both in the open court and in the half court to jump out to a 38-26 halftime lead. They enjoyed a lead for a majority of the half but their biggest run came towards the end of the half. La Roche held a slim 21-20 advantaged but scored eleven straight points for a comfortable halftime lead. Trell Thomas and RayQuan Phifer combined for all eleven points.
La Roche did a great job making the extra pass to find the open man. Thomas was the beneficiary on more than one occasion and went 4 for 6 from distance. Thomas entered the half with a game-high 17 points while Arnes Bajgora had 12 boards. The Redhawks hit 6 of 14 three-pointers in the first half.
La Roche started to run away in the second half. They opened the half on a 14-3 run and hit a trio of three-pointers over the course of the run. Medaille hung around but never came within double digits for the remainder of the game.
The Redhawks shot lights out in the second half. They hit 18 of 27 field goals (67%) and went a perfect 6 for 6 from beyond the arc. Thomas, Phifer and Andy Abreu all had 10 points in the second half.
Thomas had the best game of his young career. He finished with 27 points and hit 6 of 8 shots from distance. Bajgora registered the double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds while Phifer came up a rebound short with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Abreu finished with 14 points and Evan Bonnaure had 9.
The Redhawks were dominate on the glass. They outrebounded Medaille 40-21 and kept possession after possession alive on the offensive boards.
La Roche will host Allegheny next Thursday night at 6pm. Allegheny started off the season 3-0 but have lost the past six.
