Redhawks Win-Streak Reaches Double Digits After Victory over D'Youville

PITTSBURGH, PA – The La Roche men's basketball ran their win-streak to double digits after defeating D'Youville College 79-66 on Saturday afternoon. The Redhawks improve to 8-0 in the AMCC and play Penn State Behrend on Wednesday.

The Redhawks opened the game on a 10-0 run and hit 4 of their first 5 shots. La Roche hit a pair open threes in the corner and forced D'Youville to burn a timeout just two and a half minutes into the game.

The Spartans broke their scoreless drought after the timeout but La Roche answered on the other end with an open three by Zach Gould. Both teams traded baskets over the next four minutes and D'Youville fought to get back into the game. Coach Carmichael called a timeout but the Spartans scored three straight baskets to cut the deficit to one with 11:45 left in the first.

A pair of Evan Bonnaure buckets and a Darius Lawrence three quickly swung the momentum back in the Redhawks' favor. Dion Etheridge converted a three point play with seven minutes left in the half. La Roche followed with a 20-6 run and entered halftime ahead 45-35.

La Roche was dominant on the boards over the first twenty minutes. They outrebounded the Spartans 27-11 including 15-2 on the offensive end. Gould scored 10 first half points and Ryan Norkus had 8 points and 6 rebounds. D'Youville hung around because of their shooting efficiency.

D'Youville hit opened the half on an 11-4 run and scored 15 of the first 23 points.  The Spartans cut the lead to 56-54 but Gould limited the damage with a three-point play while Etheridge and Bajgora provided shots from distance.

D'Youville again cut the lead to two with nine minutes left. Darius Lawrence nailed a three to go back ahead by five and La Roche followed with the next five points for a 71-61 lead.

Both teams went cold as neither could find a basket over the next three minutes. Etheridge broke the scoreless streak with two scores in less than ten seconds. Bonnaure hit an open three with 2:04 left and the Redhawks cruised.

Gould finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds to register a double-double. Bonnaure provided 15 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists while Bajgora had 11 points.

La Roche outrebounded D'Youville 49-23 including an impressive 25-3 performance on the offensive boards. The Redhawks shot 39% (18 of 44) from the field and 34% (9 of 26) from distance. 

The Redhawks will travel to rival Penn State Behrend on Wednesday in a big AMCC Conference game. Tip-off is 8pm.
