Redhawks End Road Trip With Loss to Washington & Jefferson

WASHINGTON, PA – La Roche College Lacrosse (0-3) ended their three-game road trip with a 19-7 loss to local rival Washington & Jefferson (2-1) on a cold and snowy Saturday.

Neither the Redhawks nor Washington & Jefferson could gain the upper hand in the early stages of the game. Both teams went scoreless in the first 13 minutes of the first quarter when the Presidents took a one goal lead at the 1:39 mark. Blaine Schaffner evened it up at 1-1 in the quarter's closing seconds when he blew a shot past Washington & Jefferson's goalie.

The Presidents took a 2-1 advantage early in the second quarter before Schaffner answered just 4 seconds later to even it up. The Redhawks rallied again this time when Jon Monahan scored his first goal of the season to tie it at 3-3, but Washington & Jefferson scored 4 straight goals to take control of the game.

Schaffner and Monahan each had 2 goals and Jean Thouin and Bryce Wells each registered 1. Dustin Reykdal netted a goal and an assist, finished with a game-high 11 shots, and went 9-9 in the faceoff circle.

Schaffner paced the Redhawks on defense with 7 ground balls and Monahan and Wells picked up 4 apiece. Eugene LaBorde made 14 stops in the loss.

Both teams finished with 26 turnovers and La Roche produced 38 shots including 23 that reached goal. The Redhawks also converted 14 of 22 clears and picked up 29 ground balls.

La Roche College Lacrosse will return to campus for their home-opener on Saturday, March 9 for a 1:00PM game against Alfred University. This is the first meeting between the two teams.
