PITTSBURGH, PA – The La Roche men's lacrosse team nearly overcame a seven goal deficit before falling to Bethany 13-11 in their home opener on Monday. The Redhawks outscored Bethany 7-2 in the second half.
Sam Crum scored the game's opening goal but Bethany answered with six straight for a 6-1 lead. Crum netted two within a minute to cut the deficit to just three. He added another goal late in the half as the Redhawks entered halftime trailing 9-4.
Coach McBride's halftime adjustment helped the Redhawks almost overcome the big deficit. Bethany scored the second half's first goal but Crum's fifth of the day kept the scoring margin at five. Nick Mysnyk, Devin Wolford and Brent Burkhous also tallied goals in the third quarter.
La Roche entered the fourth quarter trailing 13-9. Goals by Crum and Brad LaBovick with more than eight minutes left gave the Redhawks life. Burkhous scored his second of the game with 1:25 left, but the Redhawks ran out of time and Bethany held on.
Crum finished with a career-high 6 goals. Burkhous had 2 goals and 2 assists while LaBovick had a goal and 3 assists. Mysnyk contributed a goal and 2 assists and Wolford a goal and an assist.
The Redhawks defense was solid. Blake Foglio made 16 saves while Mysnyk and Burkhous forced three turnovers.
La Roche will travel to St. Vincent on March 15.
