Softball Comes Back to Earn AMCC Split With Hilbert

PITTSBURGH, PA – The La Roche softball team ended their losing streak and earned their first AMCC win of the year after splitting with Hilbert. Hilbert took the first game 11-7 before the Redhawks came back to win Game 2 6-3.

Game 1:

Savannah Leonard used a comebacker to the mound to leave a runner on first base in the top of the first. The Redhawks took advantage climbing out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning.

Andie Lippman singled to left field and the ball slipped under the left fielder's glove allowing her to advance to second. Kara Sainato was hit by a pitch and Leonard hit a bloop single into right to load the bases. Emily Samluk drew a 3-2, 2-out bases loaded walk to give La Roche a one run lead.

The Redhawks added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Shelby Oswald drew a walk to lead off the inning. The next two Redhawks struck out but an error allowed the inning to continue. Sainato came through with a 2-run bloop single into right field for a 3-0 lead.

Hilbert tied it with three runs in the third inning. La Roche stranded runners at the corners in the bottom of the third and Hilbert took a 4-3 lead in the fourth.

The Redhawks responded in bottom of the fourth. Kaylee Grassmyer led off the inning with a triple to the centerfield wall and advanced home on a Lippman double down the line. Lippman then gave the Redhawks a 5-4 lead when she slid under a tag at home.

Hilbert regained the lead in the fifth with three straight 2-out RBIs. Josie Buckley kept things going with a 2-out hit and then scored as Shelby Oswald hustled into third with an RBI stand-up triple.

Hilbert went up 11-6 in the sixth but the Redhawks got one back in the bottom of the inning. Sainato singled up the middle and scored on a Leonard triple to the wall.

Game 2:

Hilbert loaded the bases and took a 1-0 lead on a sac fly. They added a second run in the second inning before an Oswald triple to the right field gap cut the deficit to just one. Oswald scored on the next at bat when Ordos sent a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield.

Hilbert grabbed the lead with an RBI single in the top of the third. Grassmyer stranded a runner at second with a comebacker to the mound.

Lippman led off the third with a single, stole second and then advanced to third on a groundout. Two straight outs including a strikeout looking ended the threat.

Grassmyer got out of another jam in the fourth leaving runners at second and third base.

The Redhawks took advantage with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. A Sainato groundout scored Bayer from third base and a Leonard 2-out single through the left side scored Lippman. Leonard scored all the way from first on a Buckley triple and then Samluk hit in Leonard.

Grassmyer shut down Hilbert in the sixth and seventh innings and the Redhawks earned their first conference victory.

Grassmyer was terrific scattering just three runs in the seven inning complete game shutout.
