GREENSBURG, PA – La Roche women's basketball (13-2, 8-1) held Pitt-Greensburg (7-9, 5-4) to just 16 field goals and the Lady Redhawks forced 22 turnovers in a 75-53 win on Monday night.
La Roche used an 11-0 run midway through the second half to break open a five point game. Jessica Pitts sparked the surge with a wire-to-wire layup and the Lady Redhawks followed with buckets on five consecutive possessions. La Roche held Pitt-Greensburg to just 23% from the field in the second half.
Jessica Pitts led all scorers with 17 points and added 9 rebounds and 5 assists in 36 minutes of play. Casie Cygan and LaShauna Brothers tallied 14 points each and Amanda Garland notched 11 points on 5 of 9 from the field. Leslie McPherson finished with 10 points and hit 8 of 11 free throws.
Coach Gissendanner attributed the win to great team defense and their ability to dictate the pace of the game.
"I thought today was a great team effort and it all started with our defense. Pitt-Greensburg is a great team and very disciplined, but I thought that we were able to set the tone and keep the pace in our favor."
The Lady Redhawks tied a season-high with 10 blocks and they held Pitt-Greensburg to their third lowest offensive output of the season. La Roche outscored the Bobcats off turnovers (24-11), second chance points (11-1), and on points in the paint (38-24). They also allowed Pitt-Greensburg to attempt just 9 three-pointers, their lowest of the season and 10 attempts below their average.
Coach Gissendanner was pleased with the win after a tough defeat on Saturday.
"After a loss to Penn State Behrend, I thought that this was a good bounce-back win. I'm proud of our team and the way they fought today."
La Roche will host D'Youville on Saturday at 1:00PM. The Spartans currently sit in seventh place in the AMCC and are coming off a 62-49 win over Penn State Altoona.
