PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The La Roche College women's basketball team (16-4, 11-2) took a lead on the opening possession and never trailed as they defeated Mount Aloysius (11-7, 9-4) 78-43 on Thursday night in the Kerr Fitness Center.
Leslie McPherson connected from three on the opening possession for the Lady Redhawks, who opened with a 10-2 run to take control of the game.
The Mounties scored on a steal and fast break to get within 24-17 at the 6:26 mark, but La Roche responded with back-to-back scores from Mackenzie O'Donnell and LaShauna Brothers. Casie Cygan followed with a jumper, before consecutive steals led to fast break lay-ups for Gloria Schifino and Danasha Harris.
The Lady Redhawks closed the half on a 20-4 run to take a commanding 44-21 lead into the break.
Brothers and Cygan scored 12 points apiece in the first half to lead the offensive attack for La Roche. The Lady Redhawks assisted on an impressive 14 of 19 field goals in the opening frame.
La Roche picked up right where it left off in the second half, opening on a 24-5 run to squash any chance of a Mountie comeback. The Lady Redhawks reached their biggest lead at 66-26 at the 9:31 mark, before recording the 78-43 win.
Brothers paced the offense with 19 points and 5 assists, followed by Harris with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. Cygan poured in 14 points, while McLin chipped in 10 points.
Mount Aloysius shot just 29% for the game (19-66), including an icy 13% from three (3-23).
La Roche shot 47% for the game (33-71), including 33% from deep (5-15).
With the win, the Lady Redhawks improve to 11-2 in the AMCC to keep pace with Medaille. The loss drops Mount Aloysius to 9-4 in the AMCC.
La Roche returns to AMCC action Saturday, February 8 against Pitt-Bradford. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m., immediately after the La Roche College Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
