PITTSBURGH, PA – La Roche women's basketball (23-4) cruised to an 91-55 victory over Mt. Aloysius (17-11) to become the first team to win four straight AMCC Conference Titles and earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Seniors Casie Cygan and Leslie McPherson also become the first players to go four for four in championship games.
The visiting Mounties used their size to take an early 8-1 lead, but just like in the AMCC Tournament Semifinal, La Roche hit a layup and came out in the full court press to take back the lead. The Lady Redhawks forced thirteen Mt. Aloysius turnovers and also converted 5 of 9 shots from behind the arc to take a 48-28 lead into the locker room.
Sabrina McLin drained a trio of 3-pointers and hit two field goals to enter the half with 15 points. Casie Cygan, fresh off her 35-point performance in the AMCC Semifinals, netted 12 points before intermission while Shataya White added 9 points.
The Lady Redhawks outrebounded the top rebounding team in the AMCC by twelve in the first half and grabbed eight more offensive rebounds.
La Roche played more of a half-court game in the second half to build on their big lead. The Lady Redhawks held Mt. Aloysius to just nine field goals in the second while they shot 52% from the field. La Roche grabbed eleven more rebounds in the final frame.
McLin finished with a game-high 23 points including five 3-pointers while LaShauna Brothers had 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. Cygan had a terrific tournament scoring 51 points in two days including 16 points in the finals. Shataya White registered 12 points and Mackenzie O'Donnell added 8 boards. Danasha Harris had 7 points and 6 rebounds in the win.
The Lady Redhawks shot 49% (31 of 63) from the field and 50% (8 of 16) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the league's top rebounding team by 23 and forced 22 Mounties turnovers. La Roche also outscored Mt. Aloysius off of turnovers (35-10), in the paint (30-12), on 2nd chance points (20-5), and on the fast break (14-0).
The Lady Redhawks await their NCAA Tournament site and seeding which will be announced on Monday.
