CRESSON, PA – The La Roche women's basketball team hung on to beat Mt. Aloysius 61-58 in a matchup of the AMCC's top two teams from last season. The victory improves their conference record to 3-0.
The Lady Redhawks never trailed after the first minute of action but Mt. Aloysius kept it in single digits for a majority of the game. La Roche led by six points with 2:38 left in the game, but two straight three-pointers by the Mounties tied it with just a minute-twenty remaining. La Roche followed with a missed three-point attempt but Danasha Harris pulled down the big board and was fouled. Harris made one of two free throws then Shataya White put the game away with a steal and layup as the buzzer sounded.
"Much credit to Mount, they made us work for every possession", said Coach Gissendanner. "It came down to us being poised and making plays down the stretch. One of our senior leaders Shataya made a gutsy play to seal the game and we came out on top."
Four Lady Redhawks scored in double figures including White who tallied a game-high 18 points. Mackenzie O'Donnell registered her second straight double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. LaShauna Brothers had 15 points and 8 rebounds and Sabrina McLin 13 points including 3 three-pointers. Harris pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds in the victory.
Women's hoops will travel to D'Youville College on Saturday to take on the conference undefeated Spartans. D'Youville is coming off a 62-59 OT win against Pitt-Greensburg.
