PITTSBURGH, PA—The Lady Redhawks opened the 2015-16 season with an impressive 82-40 victory over former AMCC rival Frostburg State. La Roche brought their aggressive defense and toughness on the boards to cruise in the season-opening win.
The home squad dominated the stat line in the first half outrebounding Frostburg State 30-8 and holding the Bobcats to just 18% from the field. La Roche hit 7 of 14 shots from beyond the arc thanks to Darrian Johnson's 4 for 7 first half performance. Johnson led all scorers entering the locker room with 13 points while Danasha Harris had 6 rebounds and Gloria Schifino 4 assists.
TiChina Mitchell and Sabrina McLin put up big numbers in the second half. They helped La Roche score an incredible thirty-one points in the ten minute third quarter while holding Frostburg State to just twenty-four second half points. McLin finished with 14 points, 5 steals and 5 assists in the second half while Mitchell had 14 points and 6 boards.
La Roche had one of their best rebounding performances in school history holding a 61-19 edge on the boards. They held Frostburg State to just 24% from the field and under 6% from three point range. The Lady Redhawks were extremely efficient on the offensive end hitting 44% of their shots and assisting on 25 of 32 field goals.
Mitchell recorded a double-double in her first collegiate game with 21 points and 11 rebounds. McLin put up 20 points and 8 assists while Johnson had 17 points. Harris and Mackenzie O'Donnell each had 11 rebounds.
The Lady Redhawks continue their tough out of conference schedule next Tuesday when they host Mt. Union. Tip-off is 7pm.
