Women's Hoops Clinches First-Round Bye With Victory Over Hilbert

PITTSBURGH, PA – La Roche clinched at least a bye in this year's AMCC Tournament after putting together a 61-43 win over Hilbert on Saturday. Pitt-Bradford, the Lady Redhawks' main competition to host the AMCC Tournament, fell today at Penn State Altoona.

Hilbert shot 67% in the first ten minutes but La Roche did enough to grab a 19-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. Coach Gissendanner regrouped her squad at the first break and the Redhawks held Hilbert to just 18% shooting in the second quarter to enter halftime with a 35-20 lead. Mackenzie O'Donnell paced La Roche with 13 points while TiChina Mitchell added 4 steals and Danasha Harris 5 rebounds.

The Hawks nearly equaled La Roche in the third quarter but the home squad controlled the fourth and won the defensive battle by eighteen. Hilbert has held the Redhawks to their two lowest point totals of the season (58 points on January 9).

Sabrina McLin led La Roche with 20 points (8 of 13 FG) and 7 rebounds while O'Donnell had 15 points and Mitchell 12 (6 of 10 FT). Mitchell also had 6 steals and Harris 6 assists.

The Redhawks put together a terrific defensive performance after a hot start by Hilbert. They held Hilbert to just 27% from the field after the first quarter and 37% for the game. La Roche also outrebounded the top rebounding team in the league by six.

The women's basketball team will host the 2015 AMCC runner-ups Pitt-Greensburg next Wednesday at 8PM. La Roche beat Greensburg 80-47 earlier this season.
