PITTSBURGH, PA – The La Roche women's basketball team dropped their 2016-17 season opener to #18 Carnegie Mellon 74-45 on Tuesday evening at the Kerr Fitness Center. The Tartans reached the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen last season.
Carnegie Mellon ended the first quarter with a 16-6 lead and entered halftime ahead 30-16. The Redhawks shot just 23% (7 of 31) in the first half and went 0 for 6 from beyond the arc. The big difference came on the boards with CMU using their height to outrebounded the Redhawks 26-12. Sabrina McLin led La Roche with 8 first half points and Mackenzie O'Donnell had 4 rebounds.
The Redhawks were more assertive on the boards in the second half cutting the rebounding margin to just six. They shot 35% (10 for 29) from the field and AMCC Preseason Player of the Year Sabrina McLin heated up with 17 points over the game's final twenty minutes.
McLin finished with a game-high 25 points going 8 for 18 from the field and 8 for 10 from the foul line. Danasha Harris led the Redhawks with 7 rebounds while Harris and Dalesza Regan had 3 steals.
Carnegie Mellon All-American Lisa Murphy finished with 24 points and 22 rebounds.
Next up: The Redhawks will play in the Washington & Jefferson Tip-Off Tournament on Friday and Saturday. They take on Earlham at 6pm on Friday with the winner playing the winner of W&J/Case Western.
