LATROBE, PA – St. Vincent outlasted the Redhawks 80-76 in an overtime thriller on Monday night. The game featured three buzzer beater three-pointers.
The Redhawks fall to 6-3 on the season while St. Vincent improves to 5-4. Sabrina McLin moves closer to the school's scoring record and sits just 17 points behind former teammate Casie Cygan.
St. Vincent hit 8 of their first 12 shots to build a ten point lead with just 2:53 left in the first quarter. La Roche clamped down on defense and ended the quarter on a 12-2 run to tie it at 19-19. TiChina Mitchell scored 9 first quarter points including a three-point play. Sabrina McLin had 8 points and tied it with a three at the buzzer.
The lead changed hands four times in the second quarter. This time St. Vincent drained a three at the buzzer to enter halftime ahead 34-32. McLin led the Redhawks with 12 first half points and Danasha Harris had 8 rebounds.
Each team enjoyed a four point lead in the third quarter. The Bearcats climbed ahead six minutes into the quarter but a five point swing put La Roche on top by four with just 1:34 left in the third. St. Vincent closed the quarter on a 5-1 run and hit their second three pointer buzzer beater to tie it at 51-51.
Neither the Redhawks nor St. Vincent could take control in a fourth quarter that featured four ties and three lead changes. La Roche held a 63-60 lead with 1:02 left but a layup and then a three-pointer with 31 seconds left gave the Bearcats a 65-63 lead. The Redhawks missed the ensuing layup but Mitchell grabbed the rebound and her putback sent the game into overtime.
St. Vincent led by as many as five points with fifty-four seconds left but the Redhawks rallied down the stretch. McLin hit a jumper to get within three and Mitchell followed with a layup to cut the deficit to just one.
La Roche tried to extend the game by forcing the Bearcats to the free throw line, but St. Vincent went 4 for 4 at the line to hold on.
Mitchell led all scorers with 29 points. McLin finished with 22 points for her ninth straight double-digit game. Harris registered a double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds) and went a perfect 5 for 5 from the field. O'Donnell had 12 points and Schifino 5 assists.
La Roche dominated in the paint but the difference came at the three point line. The Redhawks managed to sink just 2 out of 14 attempts while St. Vincent went 8 for 22.
The Redhawks are now on holiday break and will not return to action until the Baldwin Wallace Tournament on December 29-30. La Roche will play Loras on the 29th and either Baldwin Wallace or Wooster on the 30th. Loras made it to the NCAA Tournament last season.
