BEREA, OH -- The La Roche women's basketball team pulled out an incredible 88-86 2OT win over Wooster to survive a scare in the Baldwin Wallace Holiday Tournament consolation game. Mitchell scored a season-high 38 points in the win.
The game consisted mostly of runs. The Redhawks would take a multi-basket lead and then Wooster would respond with their own run to keep the game close.
La Roche led by as many as seven points in first quarter and then built their lead up to eight in the second quarter. It looked like their were going to enter halftime with a significant lead, but Wooster scored four points in the final thirty seconds and trailed by just three. Mitchell scored 17 first half points.
Wooster scored the second half's first four points to grab their first lead since early in the first quarter. Neither team took a lead by more than three points in regulation but Wooster still needed to find a basket trailing by three with just seconds left.
La Roche fouled Wooster's Kylie Orr on her three point attempt at the buzzer giving them an opportunity to tie it. Orr came up clutch making all three free throws and sent the game into overtime.
The Redhawks trailed by three with less than a minute in the first overtime. Harris put back a missed three to bring La Roche within a point with fifty-four seconds left. They then made a stop on the defensive end and Mitchell drained a free throw to force a second overtime.
The Redhawks again found themselves down late in the second overtime. Orr's layup with twenty-seven seconds left put Wooster up a point. On the next possession, the Redhawks drove down the court and Mitchell made a short jumper for an 87-86 with fifteen seconds to play. The Redhawks forced a turnover and hung on for the thrilling win.
Mitchell was terrific. She scored a game-high 38 points to go along with 10 rebounds and made 8 of 9 free throws. Harris registered a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds while also dishing out 6 assists. Harris has now scored in double figures in eight straight games.
O'Donnell (15 points) and Johnson (14 points) both reach double figures in the 2OT win.
Neither team was particularly sharp from the field. The Redhawks shot 39% (28 of 71) and hit 4 of 12 3-pointers to Wooster's 38% (30 of 79) and 11 of 27 3-pointers. La Roche hit 28 of 40 free throws which ultimately was the difference in the game.
The Redhawks will not play again until 2017 when they travel to Mt. Aloysius on Wednesday. The Mounties are 4-6 overall and 2-2 in the AMCC.
