PITTSBURGH, PA – La Roche broke open a close game on Wednesday night to defeat Pitt-Greensburg 70-63. The victory extends their conference win streak to sixteen games and they improve to a perfect 7-0 in the AMCC.
Pitt-Greensburg controlled the tempo early and led 20-15 after the first quarter. The Bobcats shot 64% over the opening ten minutes and they outrebounded La Roche 9-4. Five different Redhawks scored but they shot just 36%.
La Roche opened the second quarter with a 12-0 run to swing the momentum in their favor. Dalesza Regan and Shawnshirae Brown-Kirby brought energy off the bench to spark the run and TiChina Mitchell scored 8 points.
La Roche traded baskets with the Bobcats over the next several possessions as neither team could take control before the half. The Redhawks did significantly better on the boards in the second quarter outrebounding Pitt-Greensburg 11-5.
La Roche entered the half with a 35-31 lead. Mitchell had 14 first half points and Greensburg's Jenna Cole scored 16.
The Redhawks shot 47% in the third quarter to more than double their lead. Both teams had similar shooting percentages but La Roche attempted six more to extend their lead. The play of the quarter came when Kirby ran the length of the court and hit a buzzer beater.
Pitt-Greensburg hung around in the fourth quarter and kept the game within single digits. A short jumper by Cole got the Bobcats within seven with 2:15 left but Darrian Johnson answered on the other end with a three-point play. The Redhawks converted their free throws down the stretch to hang on.
La Roche returns to action on Saturday when they host D'Youville. It is the AMCC Game of the Week.
