Redhawks Sweep Penn College For First Wins Of Season

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — La Roche baseball used a late offensive surge and strong bullpen work in game one to defeat the Penn College Wildcats, 5–2, then in game two, Kade Sell's complete game effort led to a 6-2 win.

GAME ONE: LRU 5 Penn 2

After the two teams battled through five scoreless innings, La Roche broke through late and pulled away with a three-run ninth inning to secure the victory.

Both starting pitchers controlled the game early. La Roche starter Jamison Rhoades worked efficiently through the first several innings, matching zeros with Penn College's Griffin Vollman.

The Redhawks finally broke the deadlock in the sixth inning. Eli Thomas reached and later came around to score when Aaron Exler ripped an RBI double to left field, giving La Roche a 1–0 lead.

La Roche extended the advantage in the seventh inning. Chase Sankovich reached base and used his speed on the bases before Thomas delivered an RBI single to right-center, pushing the Redhawks ahead 2–0.

Penn College answered in the bottom of the seventh. A two-run single from Logan Hinnershitz brought home a pair of runs and evened the score at 2–2.

The Redhawks responded in the ninth inning with their biggest rally of the afternoon.

DJ Loveland sparked the inning and came around to score when Kade Sell blasted an RBI double to right field to regain the lead. Moments later, Liam Burns delivered the decisive hit, lining a two-run double into the gap to plate Eli Thomas and Sell and extend the lead to 5–2.

Reliever Troy Sallis shut the door for La Roche, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings while striking out four to earn the win after entering in relief of Rhoades.

Rhoades went 6.1 innings, allowing two runs while keeping the Redhawks in position to rally late.

GAME TWO: LRU 6 Penn 2

La Roche collected nine hits, drew seven walks, and played error-free defense behind a complete-game effort from Kade Sell to secure the win.

La Roche opened the scoring in the second inning. Jordan Sullivan came around to score when DJ Loveland singled to center field, and an error allowed Loveland to move into scoring position while giving the Redhawks an early 1–0 lead.

Penn College answered in the fourth inning. Matt Munoz tied the game with an RBI double before Ty Jenkins followed with an RBI single to give the Wildcats a 2–1 advantage.

The Redhawks wasted little time responding in the bottom of the fourth.

Troy Sallis scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, and La Roche continued to apply pressure. Chase Sankovich dropped down a sacrifice bunt that brought home Logan Badac, and Eli Thomas added an RBI single to cap the rally and push the Redhawks ahead 4–2.

La Roche added to its lead in the fifth inning.

Badac delivered a clutch RBI triple to left field to plate Sallis, and Loveland followed with another run-scoring single that brought home Badac and extended the Redhawks' lead to 6–2.

Sell handled the rest from there. The right-hander turned in a complete-game performance, allowing just five hits and two runs while striking out 10 batters over seven innings.
