Volleyball Picks Up First AMCC Win In Five Set Thriller

Volleyball Picks Up First AMCC Win In Five Set Thriller

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – La Roche volleyball hosted its first AMCC match of the season against Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday night and held off the Bobcats to win, 3-2, in a thrilling five set match.

Set one was an early sequence of runs, followed by back and forth action, trading points.

Greensburg opened with a 4-1 lead, quickly countered by a 4-0 La Roche run to lead, 5-4, then the Bobcats were back on top with a 4-0 run, 8-5, before the Redhawks went ahead 10-8.

The remainder of the match was neck and neck, while La Roche upped the lead to 17-14 shortly after, an 8-2 UPG run moved the Bobcats ahead, 22-19.

La Roche regained control with a 4-0 run, taking a 23-22 lead, then after UPG tied the set again, the Redhawks took a 1-0 match lead, scoring the final two points.

Set two was still even, as neither team led by more than two points, when the score sat 12-11 in favor of La Roche.

This time, the Bobcats stored ahead, using an 11-4 run to take a 22-16 lead, before closing the set with a 25-18 victory to tie the match at 1-1.

Like set two, set three still had the two teams fighting to build a lead, this tie it sat in favor of UPG, 16-14, at the midway point.

It was the Redhawks turn to flip things around, charging ahead, 20-17, but again, the Bobcats tied the score, 20-20. La Roche pulled through to go up 2-1 in the match, scoring five of thee final six points to win 25-21.

Set four was an oddity in the match the way the first three sets played out, as UPG dominated, building a 15-5 lead and cruised to force a deciding fifth set with a 25-14 victory.

With momentum on the side of the Bobcats and the ghost of Saturday's loss to Hilbert, which ended in a similar manner, up 2-1, a tough fourth set, then a fifth set defeat, the Redhawks wouldn't allow that to happen twice.

La Roche took complete control in the fifth set, storming ahead, 7-0 and held off a 4-0 run by UPG to move ahead 11-4 and ultimately take the victory, 15-7 to pick up the win.

For the Redhawks, Kalli Grine led the offense with a game-high 14 kills, with Ava Fox following with a career best, nine. Riley Lewis led all setters with her career high of 24, while Estelle Winck provided 15 on the night.

On the defensive side, Kaci DePalma pulled through with a match best, 29 digs, while Megan Bologna provided 13. Fox was equally as solid on the block, as she led the team with four assisted blocks.

La Roche concludes its week of play at home on Saturday, Oct. 18 when they play host to Penn State Behrend. Opening serve is slated for 1 p.m.
