PITTSBURGH, PA – The La Roche College baseball team (6-12) fell short in an extra-innings battle against Thiel College (7-9), falling to the Tomcats 7-5 at John Arnold Sr. Memorial Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Starting pitcher, Adam Sepesy, allowed 2 runs (2 ER) on 7 hits while striking out 7 in four innings of work. Ian Kelly, Tyler Ferguson, and Jesse Bauer pitched in relief, allowing 5 runs (1 ER) in the final six innings.
With two outs and trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Redhawks reeled off 5 consecutive hits, including triples by Casey Zimmerman, Ryan Fennell, and Ed Skoneiczny, to take a 4-2 lead entering the sixth.
The Tomcats answered with three of their own in the top of the sixth to regain the lead at 5-4 before C. Zimmerman belted his second triple of the game to tie the game at 5-5 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth.
The game went into extra-innings after a scoreless ninth, where Thiel College took advantage of an error to net two runs in the top of the tenth inning. La Roche responded in the bottom of the tenth by loading the bases with no outs, but failed to score after a strikeout and double-play spoiled their comeback hopes.
C. Zimmerman was an impressive 4 for 5 with two triples and a double from the plate, while Anthony Girdano went 3 for 5 with a double, and Skoneiczny reached base 3 times.
The Redhawks reopen AMCC Conference play this Saturday when they host a double-header against Medaille College. The opener is scheduled for 1:00PM.
