MARIETTA, OH -- La Roche Baseball (24-18) jumped out to a two-run first inning lead before falling to #1 seed and defending national champion Marietta (38-6) 12-3 in NCAA Tournament Regional action on Wednesday.
Casey Zimmerman gave the Redhawks a 1-0 lead when he tripled to right-center field and scored on a sacrifice hit by Ryan Fennell to go up 2-0. La Roche scored a third run on an RBI single by Brian Tougher but Marietta's Josh Ungerbuehler registered 6 RBI to lead the host Pioneers.
Shane Healey paced La Roche with 3 hits and scored and Casey Zimmerman added his fourth triple of the season. Brian Tougher and Ryan Fennell recorded RBI and Dustin Lalle had a run. Tyler Ferguson recorded his first loss since April 3 and snapped his 15 inning scoreless streak. Fennell allowed just 2 earned runs in 3 innings and JJ Tougher pitched a scoreless eighth in relief.
The Redhawks return to action tomorrow (Thursday) at 9:30AM against Westminster College. Westminister fell to St. John Fisher 13-7 in the first game of the day.
