Baseball Opens Season With Double Header Sweep of Waynesburg

Waynesburg, PA – La Roche College Baseball (2-0) gets off to a strong start in 2013, sweeping Waynesburg University (0-2) 4-2 and 3-2 in a double header on Saturday.

Tyler Ferguson took the mound for the Redhawks' season opener and got off to a strong start, retiring the first six Waynesburg batters in order. La Roche scored first in the 2nd inning after Brian Tougher singled and later scored on an RBI double by Colin Williamson. Waynesburg answered in the 3rd, taking a 2-1 lead after two hits and two La Roche errors. Waynesburg took the one run advantage into the 7th inning before the Redhawks mounted a comeback. Sean Lubin started the rally after getting hit by a pitch with one out and Shane Healey followed with a single to left. The duo stole second and third before Anthony Girdano smacked a 2 RBI double to left-center. Dan Burns increased the lead to 4-2 with another RBI double to left field. Jesse Bauer shut the door on Waynesburg and picked up his first win of the season with a 1-2-3 inning, capped off by an emphatic strikeout.

The Redhawks pitching staff had an impressive debut, holding Waynesburg to 4 hits and 2 earned runs, while striking out 8. Ferguson started the game and lasted 4 innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs (2 ER) with 4 strikeouts. Tim Devine and Walt Hadjuk pitched in relief and combined for a scoreless inning. Bauer recorded the win, striking out 3 and allowing 0 hits and 0 runs over the final two frames.

Shane Healey led off for the Redhawks and went 1 for 3 with a run and two stolen bases. Anthony Girdano went 1 for 4 with 2 RBI's and Brad Goedeker went 2 for 3. La Roche out hit Waynesburg 8 to 4 in the win.

The Redhawks picked up where they left off in the 2nd game, jumping out to an early lead in the first. La Roche never trailed in the game. Healey started the game with a walk before stealing second and third, and later scored on Girdano's RBI double. Ryan Fennell started the game for the Redhawks and retired 5 of the first 6 batters. La Roche scored again in the 3rd inning after an RBI double by Burns. The Jackets answered with a run of their own after a walk and passed ball produced an RBI single in the bottom-half of the frame. The Redhawks manufactured a run in the 5th to take a 3-1 lead. Healey led off with a walk and got to third after a SAC bunt and passed ball, and scored on a SAC fly to right field by Girdano. Waynesburg sliced into the La Roche lead in the 6th, scoring a run on a pair of doubles and chasing Fennell from the game. Bauer stepped in to preserve the win and picked up his first save of the season.

The pitching staff had another strong performance in the 2nd game. Fennell got the win, throwing 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs (2 ER) on 6 hits, 1 walk, and 1 strikeout. Bauer threw the final inning and 2/3, recording 2 strikeouts and giving up 0 runs and 0 hits.

Coach Rowe credited the pitching staff for big performances.

"I thought our pitching was key. Bauer got the win in game one and the save in game two and Ferguson and Fennell had quality starts. Our bullpen did their job in some match-up situations."

Healey paced the offense by going 1 for 2 with 3 runs and 2 steals. Anthony Girdano went 1 for 2 with a double and 2 RBI's, while Dan Burns was 1 for 3 with a RBI double.

"It's great to get two wins in our first action of the season, especially against a quality opponent," said Coach Rowe. "We had a lot of great at bats and good two strike hitting. Base running was the key offensively to pick up those two wins."

The Redhawks return to action next weekend, when they travel to Fort Pierce, FL for Spring Break. La Roche will take on Elizabethtown College in a double header on March 3, starting at 12:00 PM. The Redhawks also face Susquehanna University on March 4, Misericordia University on March 6, Marywood University on March 7, and Keystone College on March 8.
