PITTSBURGH, PA – La Roche Baseball (15-4) extended their win-streak to four games and home win-streak to 17 with a decisive 12-1 victory over Bethany College (3-11) on Thursday.
Tyler Ferguson took the mound for the Redhawks and delivered another impressive performance en route to his fourth win of the season. La Roche's aggressive offense struck early and often, creating a large deficit that the Bison could not overcome.
Shane Healey reached base on an error to open the bottom half of the 1st and stole second before Brian Tougher was hit by a pitch. The duo stole second and third to set up Dan Burns with a 2 RBI single. Anthony Girdano followed with a double and a RBI groundout by Colin Feikles plated the Redhawks' third run of the inning. La Roche picked up another run in the second frame after Jon Watson led off with a triple and scored on an RBI single by Darryl Robinson.
The Redhawks stepped on the gas and busted the game open in the 4th inning. Watson once again led off with an extra base hit, this time a double, before Robinson's second RBI single brought him home. Healey followed with an RBI double of his own and Sean Lubin reached on an RBI single. Lubin created havoc on the base paths, stealing second and third before scoring on an errant pick-off attempt by the catcher. The inning continued with a single by Burns and was capped off with a towering two-run homerun to left by Girdano, pushing the lead to 10-0.
La Roche would plate another run in the 5th inning on an RBI groundout from Tyler Craig. Bethany answered in the top of the 6th after back-to-back hits created the lone run of the day for the Bison. The Redhawks would score the final run of the game in the 7th to put the lead at 12-1.
Tyler Ferguson (4-2) tossed 5 shutout innings, struck out three and allowed just two base runners. Walt Hadjuk pitched two innings in relief, allowing one earned run on two hits, while striking out two. Adam Rousseau threw the final two innings for the Redhawks, striking out one and allowing one hit.
The balanced offensive attack was overwhelming for the Bison pitchers. Healey went 2-5 with a double, 3 runs scored, 1 RBI, and 2 stolen bases. Lubin was 3-4 with 2 runs scored, 1 RBI, and 2 stolen bases. Burns went 2-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. Girdano was 2-3 with a homerun, 2 runs, and 2 RBI. Watson went 2-5 with a triple and a double, while scoring 2 runs. Robinson was 2-3 with a run scored and 2 RBI.
La Roche (15-4, 2-0) dominated both sides of the playing field and never trailed in the game. The Redhawks return to AMCC action this Saturday (April 6) at home with a double-header against Hilbert College (2-13, 1-3). First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
