PITTSBURGH, PA – La Roche Baseball (19-5, 6-0) stayed perfect in AMCC Conference play and stretched their conference win-streak to 13 games with a 7-2, 5-1 double-header sweep of Penn State Altoona (8-18, 3-7).
Starter James Connelly held the Lions' hitters in check over his 5 innings off work including a third inning where he got out of a jam with runners at second and third and no outs.
The Redhawks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the third on an Altoona error. Attempting to steal second base, Shane Healey was caught in a rundown when Franzee Baralamas took off for home. Penn State Altoona's first baseman Brandon Clark overthrew the catcher allowing La Roche to go up a run.
The Lions scored two runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI single and error to take a 2-1 lead but La Roche answered in the bottom of the sixth. Healey reached on an error and Lubin walked to put runners at first and second before both advanced on a passed ball. The next at bat Tyler Craig ripped a full-count RBI single to right centerfield and Burns followed with a single to right to score Lubin. Brad Goedeker then walked and Matt Sabatini cleared the bases with a 3 RBI single before Jesse Bauer tossed a scoreless seventh inning to preserve the win.
Craig registered 2 hits in the game including an RBI single, scored, and added a stolen base. Sabatini finished with 2 RBIs while Burns and Williamson had one RBI apiece. Healey, Lubin, Burns, Williamson, Baralamas, and Jon Watson scored runs in the win.
Connelly went 5 innings and allowed just 2 runs (1 earned run) while Bauer and Tim Devin combined for 2 scoreless innings.
Penn State Altoona took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning of Game 2 before the Redhawks answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sabatini and Craig registered RBI singles and Barlamas added a 2-out RBI hit. Williamson singled home Burns in the bottom of the sixth inning to provide La Roche with an insurance run.
Tyler Ferguson got the start and allowed just one run on 4 hits while striking out 10 batters and Bauer threw a perfect seventh inning.
Barlamas went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a stolen base and Burns added 2 hits and scored twice. Goedeker, Williamson, and Craig scored runs, and Sabitini, Williamson, and Craig had RBIs.
La Roche will look to extend their win-streak when they travel to Medaille on Saturday for a double-header. The Redhawks swept a double-header over their conference rivals last season.
