PITTSBURGH, PA – La Roche Baseball (25-10, 11-3) split a double-header with Mt. Aloysius College (21-12, 8-6) 7-1 (W), 6-3 (L) in a rematch of the 2012 AMCC Championship Game. The Game 1 win clinches a bye in the AMCC Tournament.
La Roche pitcher Tyler Ferguson got off to a strong start in Game 1. He struck out the side in the top of the first and the Redhawks offense responded by giving him a one run cushion in the bottom half of the inning.
The Mounties answered with a run in the top of the third before La Roche scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Healey led off the frame with a single and scored on an RBI double down the left field line by Sean Lubin. Burns followed with a RBI single up the middle to score Lubin from second base.
The Redhawks added a run in the bottom of the fourth when Sabatini belted a double over the first base bag and Lubin, Healey, and Andrew Zeger produced sixth inning RBIs for the Game 1 win.
Ferguson cruised in the Game 1 win. He threw all 7 innings and did not allow an earned run while striking out 11 batters and walking just one.
Healey went 3 for 3 with 3 runs, an RBI, and a stolen base, and Burns finished with 2 base hits and 2 RBI. Lubin hit in 2 batters and scored and Brad Goedeker, Matt Sabatini, and Tyler Craig scored runs. Andrew Zeger registered an RBI in the win.
Mt. Aloysius took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first inning of Game 2 before Shane Healey smacked his first career home run over the left field wall to cut the lead to one run.
The Mounties added two more runs in the top of the third before La Roche answered again. After two quick outs, a walk to Anthony Girdano ignited a Redhawk rally. A single to right field by Sabatini kept the inning alive, and a walk to Craig loaded the bases. Healey delivered a 2 RBI single to left to bring the Redhawks within a run at 4-3. Mt. Aloysius scored two more runs in the top of the seventh inning for the Game 2 win.
Healey went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and a run. Girdano and Sabatini scored runs for La Roche.
La Roche Baseball will travel to D'Youville College on Saturday for their final AMCC Conference game. The Spartans are coming off a double-header sweep of Hilbert College.
