ERIE, PA – La Roche Baseball fell to Mt. Aloysius College 3-0 in an AMCC Conference Quarterfinal game on Thursday morning. The Redhawks will play at 5PM against the loser of the Penn State Behrend vs. Pitt-Greensburg game.
Two first inning walks put Sean Lubin and Shane Healey at first and second base with one out before an hour long rain delay went into effect. Following the delay, Dan Burns hit Lubin over to third base but a strike out ended the scoreless inning.
La Roche starting pitcher James Connelly and reliever Tyler Ferguson combined to take a perfect game into the fifth inning but Mt. Aloysius' Connor Bowie hit a soft dribbler through the right side of the infield to break up the no-no.
The Mounties placed runners at second and third base with two outs in the top of the seventh inning but Ferguson got a huge strikeout to keep it a scoreless game. Mt. Aloysius put runners in scoring position again with one out in the eighth when Ferguson got a line out to third base and caught Lucas Szymanski looking at strike three to end the inning.
The Mounties broke up the scoreless tie with a 2-RBI triple to right field and a bunt to take a 3-0 lead and held on for the win.
Connelly got the start and threw a perfect first inning and Ferguson tossed 7 scoreless innings of relief allowing just 4 hits while striking out 9 batters.
Mt. Aloysius pitcher Derrick Capiak threw a no-hitter in the win.
